Oostende Monumental
Turning giant boulevards into shared playgrounds
Context
A few years ago, Oostende decided to reimagine ‘Open Momumentendag’ (monuments day). Instead of highlighting buildings, the focus was put on the central axes that are defining for the current state of Oostende.
Concept
Creation of several ideas that were based on two focus points:
Let all visitors experience the relevance of the axes within the city.
All visitors were invited before and during Open Monumentendag to contribute in small scale interventions that can have a durable influence. The interventions would take place exclusively on the different central axes, attracting locals and visitors alike.
Contribution
We The City provided ideas and advice in 2016 and 2017.
Results
One project that was developed consisted of a crane taking people to a high point in Oostende where they would have an overview of the whole area. During the trip, a presenter explained to people facts concerning the beautifully visible axis.
